Canada's Got Treasures! The Four Indian Kings

The portraits of the "Four Kings" are among the earliest surviving full-length oil portraits of North American First Nations people painted from life. Three hundred years after they were painted these portraits remain a valuable record of early cultural and political diplomacy between the First Nations and the British Empire.

Move of the Rare Book Collection

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce that the Rare Book Collection has been successfully moved from 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, to the Preservation Centre in Gatineau. This decision ensures that this important collection is safe-guarded in optimum preservation conditions for the enjoyment of present and future generations of Canadians.

The move was completed ahead of schedule in two phases with minimal interruption to the public. The integrity of the collection was ensured at all times by staff members, who participated in all aspects of the move.

Items from the Rare Book Collection remain accessible to Canadians under the same consultation guidelines. Items too fragile for shipment must be consulted on-site at LAC's Preservation Centre at 625 du Carrefour Blvd., Gatineau, Quebec.

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) has released a new photo album on Flickr entitled Pride and Dignity. These images highlight aspects of Canadian heritage and history as portrayed through photographs and artworks. Organized into thematic albums, the LAC images they contain are easy to browse and make lesser-known representations of Canada's history available.

Past albums have included such themes as Canadian participation and activities during the First World War, Irish immigration to Canada, as well as immigration and quarantine facilities at Grosse �le. These collections highlight different periods of Canadian history and reveal Canada's transformation into the modern nation it is today.

LAC encourages visitors to explore our photo albums on Flickr.com, which allows people to comment, tag, and share content. Visitor participation and commentaries will help to develop a rich dialogue about the resources presented by Library and Archives Canada.

The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), a new conceptual model for bibliographic data, and the Resource Description and Access (RDA), a new cataloguing standard, can both be used to improve access to resources for all users, particularly for users with print disabilities.

The Initiative for Equitable Library Access (IELA) commissioned a study entitled "FRBR and RDA: Advances in Resource Description for Multiple Format Resources", by Chris Oliver. This paper describes issues related to cataloguing material in multiple formats, and suggests ways that these can be resolved using the FRBR model and RDA standard.

Beginning in May 2010, Library and Archives Canada has started to add digitized copies of the service files to the database to make them more accessible, to help preserve the originals and to avoid copying the same file more than once.

For files that have not yet been digitized, you can order photocopies or scanned images. The cost is the same. When a photocopy or digital copy is requested, the complete file will be scanned and the digital images will be added to the database the next time it is reloaded. In this way, all Canadians can help contribute to the preservation of our country's military heritage.

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce a new service: Canadiana Authorities. This application searches over 660,000 Canadiana name, title and name/title authority records. These name and title authorities represent standardized entries for Canadian authors/creators or issuing bodies, and for uniform titles and series titles. These records were formerly available in the Canadiana CD-Rom product. The records are exported from LAC's existing system, AMICUS, however this new application provides functionality not available for these kinds of records in AMICUS.

Shaping our Continuing Memory Collectively: A Representative Documentary Heritage

Foreword

From literacy to democracy, memory institutions have played and continue to play a key role in the functioning of societies.

The various events and emerging social practices that mark the beginning of the 21st century confirms that society has reached a point of no return regarding the influence of information technology on the formation of social fabric and social practices. The profound changes that we have experienced for at least two decades are increasingly embedded in our practices and we are beginning to feel the implications. While our relevance as a memory institution is not immediately called into question, these changes will require significant adjustments in how we work if we want to play our role and maintain our relevance in the future.

The core of our mandate is to ensure that the best possible account of Canadian life is captured through acquiring, preserving and making available essential documentary heritage to Canadians. Documentary heritage includes published and unpublished material, private and public documents and includes portraits whether in analog or digital format. Through acquisition and preservation of these resources, memory institutions are developing the causa materialis to support various interpretations (those of experts - historians, genealogists, lawyers and all citizens) of the Canadian experience in the different spheres of society.

Modernizing our institution means creating a state-of-the-art approaches by which all of the work accomplished and all of the knowledge accumulated over the last century will be kept up-to-date and will continue to be relevant to serve Canadian society. In plain language, this document lays the foundations to undertake a rethinking of the way Library and Archives Canada conducts its business in order to continue to fulfil its legal mandate in a relevant, efficient and effective manner.

The Athenian sculptor Pheidias was the most celebrated artist of classical antiquity. Greek and Latin authors praised his work, in particular his monumental gold and ivory statues of Zeus at Olympia and Athena in the Parthenon on the Akropolis. This lecture presents some of the evidence for the reconstruction of these lost masterpieces and investigates the revolutionary techniques of their production, as well as their widespread religious, political, and artistic impact, both in antiquity and afterwards. Open Letter: Lest We Forget Project

On March 8, 2010, the Globe and Mail published an article about the Lest We Forget project. For the benefit of your readers, I would like to set the record straight: the Lest We Forget project is not being cut. On the contrary, it is being expanded through partnerships and published on line to facilitate access.

Currently, four out of five of the students that use Lest We Forget do so by receiving photocopies of military records sent from Library and Archives Canada to their schools. This practice continues. Furthermore, it should be noted that on-site access to these records also continues at our offices in downtown Ottawa.

On April 9th - Vimy Ridge Day - Library and Archives Canada is launching a representative sampling of 200 digitized military service records on its website. These digitized files will allow teachers to conduct Lest We Forget activities independently, anywhere in Canada and, in fact, around the world.

Over the past six months, Library and Archives Canada has been looking at partnerships to enhance the delivery of this and other important programs. The objective of these partnerships would be, for example, to offer a Lest We Forget workshop anywhere across Canada, including Ottawa, with the help of veterans, local libraries, remembrance volunteers, or any qualified facilitator with an interest in this field. Our objective is to maximize the number of students across Canada who will discover, first-hand, the individual stories that these soldiers' files have to tell. This approach allows us to do more for this program and frees up our resources to move on the development of other important parts of the collection.

Library and Archives Canada continues to be committed to honouring Canada's military heritage. A quarter of our collection consists of military records and we actively maintain partnerships with the Department of National Defence and Veterans Affairs Canada to ensure that Canada's collection of military documents are acquired and preserved for the benefit of present and future generations.

Recent archaeological discoveries at Tell Tayinat, on the Plain of Antioch in southeastern Turkey, have begun to challenge the conventional wisdom that the Dark Ages of Biblical and Homeric lore were exclusively a time of political collapse and ethnic strife. Excavations by the University of Toronto have begun to uncover extensive remains from this turbulent era, and the emerging picture points to the existence of a powerful regional kingdom associated with the 'Land of Palastin'. Professor Harrison will present an illustrated lecture on the results of these ongoing investigations, and the historical insights they have provided to date. Presented by the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies in partnership with Archaeological Institute of America, Ottawa Society and the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey.

This talk by Gibson Glavin will describe the research journey taken by the great grand nephew of Constable George Johnston (NorthWest Mounted Police) to see the tragic death of Constable Johnston, in 1882 at Fort Walsh, officially recognized by the RCMP. Constable George Johnston was born near Billings Bridge, Ontario in 1860. He was one of the Johnston(es) clan who had immigrated to Ontario from Northern Ireland a few years earlier. He joined the NorthWest Mounted Police in 1879 and was posted to Fort McLeod, NWT. He lost his life after the accidental discharge of a rifle in the hands of another Constable. His death went unrecognized by the Mounted Police until 2009.

Ship Registration is a title system for the ownership of vessels. It was implemented in the late XVIIIth Century to ensure that ships used for the transportation of goods inside the British Empire were built and managed by British citizens, including those from colonies. This system remains in place at present, but with different objectives.

The Ship Registration Index Database (SRI) contains more than 78,000 entries of ships registered in ports of Canada between 1787 and 1966. Through this research tool, you can obtain information about a ship such as its name, its type, its official number, the year and port of registration, where it was built, its date of construction and, in some cases, what happened to it. The database also allows you to find references for the physical registers or microfilm reels.

Library and Archives Canada has completed a major project to catalogue and scan its collection of original navigation charts published in London by the Hydrographic Office of the British Admiralty. The 3,400 documents, which cover a 150-year period ending in the mid-20th century, represent the largest historical description of Canada's three major oceans and the inland waters of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. New file-level descriptions have been created for records created and/or maintained by the 10th Canadian Reserve Battalion (1916-1919), a unit of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (C.E.F.). The records document many aspects of the unit's activities. These descriptions are an electronic version of finding aid 9-74.

New Lower-Level Descriptive Records: Witley Camp

New file-level descriptions have been created for the records of Witley Camp, dating from 1915-1919 (finding aid 9-73). Witley was a camp in Surrey, England that served as a base for the 5th Division of the C.E.F. and a training facility for infantry during the First World War. At the end of the war troops were assembled at Witley prior to their return to Canada and demobilization. These records document many aspects of the activities of the camp.

International Polar Year Film Festival

The IPY is the largest international program of scientific research focused on the polar regions. It has brought together nations from around the world to shed light on some of the most pressing issues we face, such as climate change and the health and well-being of Northern peoples. The IPY Film Festival includes a range of films from educational works (documentaries, industrial films) to fiction films. After the screenings, filmmakers and researchers will discuss their films and answer questions. Photos and posters will be on display in the lobby. Marking the 40th anniversary of the Official Languages Act, this exhibition of cartoons portrays with humour and mordant irony key events and passionate political debates that have shaped our relationship with official languages. A smaller version of the exhibit will travel across the country from September 2009 to May 2010.

An Australian playbill printed for a July 30, 1796, Sydney production of Jane Shore, a drama written by a British playwright in the early 1700s, was discovered inside a 150-year-old scrapbook in the collection of Library and Archives Canada. Experts in both countries confirmed that the playbill is the oldest surviving document printed in Australia. During an official ceremony in 2007, Prime Minister Harper presented the document to the Australian Parliament.

The playbill was discovered in May 2007 by Elaine Hoag, rare books librarian in our Published Heritage Division, during the routine cataloguing of collections. Elaine will give a lecture on the significance of the 212-year-old document and how she discovered it this Thursday, February 12 at 5:30 p.m. in Exhibition Room A, Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa.

The lecture, followed by a period for questions, will be given in English.
Refreshments will be served.
Admission is free.

New Database: Immigrants to Canada before 1865

For the period before 1865, a number of lists have been identified and indexed by name in this database, formerly known as our Miscellaneous Immigration Index. Many of the records relate to immigrants from the British Isles to Quebec and Ontario, but there are also references to settlers in other provinces. The database also includes other types of records such as declarations of aliens and names of some Irish orphans.
